A little while ago, I wrote some posts about optimism. In more than post, I wrote about the late great Daniel Kahneman and one of his best quotes. I just love this one.
Nobel Prize Winning Ideas
According to psychologist and Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman, “optimistic individuals play a disproportionate role in shaping our lives. They are high performers – not your average people.
They got to where they are by seeking challenges and taking risks. People who have the greatest influence on the lives of others”.
Here is the best part.
“If you are allowed one wish for your child, seriously consider wishing him or her optimism. Optimists are normally cheerful and happy, and therefore popular; they are resilient in adapting to failures and hardships, their chances of clinical depression are reduced, their immune system is stronger, they take better care of their health, they feel healthier than others and are in fact likely to live longer.”
What better gift to give your child? What better gift to give your friends, family, team members and community.

Another Life-Long Gift
Another big invaluable gift is the gift of a strong work ethic. What better way to help your child succeed in life?
Before I get into the practical discussion, let me make two very important points.
1 – A strong work ethic is not just about work. It applies to all parts of your life. In fact, some employers don’t deserve your dedication, so you can use your strong work ethic for the parts of your life that do deserve you.
2 – Creating a strong work ethic in your children (or friends or team members) is best done by leading them with your own actions. Leading by example is always the best path. And in this way, you avoid resistance. You avoid others reacting against you by doing the opposite of what them want them to do.
Because asking others to do what you are not willing to do is a recipe for failure – yours and theirs.

Teaching your children a strong work ethic is one of the most valuable gifts you can give. It not only sets them up for success in school and future careers but also helps them develop into responsible, resilient, and well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to their communities.

Even More Benefits
I am already sounding breathless as I go on and on.
Please stay with me – the best part is yet to come.
A strong work ethic often comes with strong character values of compassion and generosity.
Teaching children a strong work ethic and instilling values like generosity and kindness are deeply interconnected. Both sets of qualities contribute to the development of responsible, empathetic, and community-minded individuals.
Here is what they have in common and how they work together.
1. Shared Core Values
- Both work ethic and kindness are rooted in values such as responsibility, respect, and integrity. A child who learns to take pride in their work is also more likely to appreciate the value of helping others and acting with compassion.
2. Empathy and Social Intelligence
- Teaching kindness and generosity fosters empathy and social intelligence, which research shows are positively linked to a strong work ethic. Children who understand and care about others are more likely to collaborate, support peers, and persist in group tasks.
3. Positive Community Impact
- Just as a strong work ethic prepares children to contribute meaningfully to society, kindness and generosity help create supportive, inclusive communities. Acts of kindness and generosity have a cascading effect, inspiring further good deeds and strengthening social bonds.
4. Building Leadership and Teamwork
- Both work ethic and kindness encourage leadership and teamwork. Children who are diligent and responsible often become role models, and when they pair these traits with generosity, they inspire others to act similarly, creating a positive feedback loop.
5. Emotional Well-Being and Resilience
- Kindness and generosity are linked to increased happiness and lower stress, which in turn support the perseverance and resilience required for a strong work ethic. Children who feel valued and supported are more likely to persist through challenges and setbacks.
6. Altruism as a Motivator
- Altruism, a key aspect of generosity, has been shown to directly influence work ethic. When children act out of a desire to help others, they often display greater commitment and pride in their work, further reinforcing positive behaviors.
The Best Part, Additive Effects
The magic happens when you lead by example.
- When adults model both a strong work ethic and acts of kindness, children learn that these qualities are not mutually exclusive but mutually reinforcing. Recognizing and rewarding both hard work and generosity encourages children to integrate these values into their daily lives.
Teaching a strong work ethic alongside generosity and kindness ensures children grow into well-rounded individuals who are not only diligent and responsible but also compassionate and community-oriented.
And we are all better for it.

Until next time, let our warm hearts soar!
